Dear KSS and Vanier families,

We made it! It has been a long journey, but Kingston Secondary School site is finally open to students and staff and the reviews so far are tremendous!

Despite several roadblocks and challenges related to construction, not to mention the COVID-19 pandemic, we are thrilled to have students from Kingston Secondary School and Module Vanier finishing out the last few days of the 2020 year in their stunning and modern new school. The process to consolidate students has been an emotional process and we acknowledge that every beginning is another beginning’s end. We know that the memories and accomplishments of the former Kingston Collegiate & Vocational Institute (KCVI) and the former Queen Elizabeth Collegiate & Vocational Institute (QECVI), will live on in the new building.   At some point in 2021, we will debut memorabilia panels that will celebrate the history of both school communities.

Many hands have been involved in the creation of the new school to bring together the school communities of the former KCVI and QECVI, and the relocation of Grade 7 and 8 intermediate French Immersion/Extended French students from Module Vanier. Our sincere thanks to students, families and staff who participated in early transition and design committee work, and to those who provided leadership on the Integration Committee. The Integration Committee provided oversight on the school’s colours, mascot and naming process. School and board staff from many departments have been involved in the actual construction process along with architect ZAS Architects and general contractor Corebuild Construction. School administration has provided brave and thoughtful leadership over the past several years as the new student body came together. We have also worked closely with community partners to ensure we are providing a continuity of services and supports for students in their new school environment. It really does take a village to build a safe, caring and inclusive school community.

The new 171,000-square-foot building is stunning, and will provide all students with new and expanded opportunities to pursue their chosen pathway.  Regardless of whether a student pursues apprenticeship, college, university, or the workplace, we know that the true importance of schools transcends the building. As we geared up for the move to the new school, it was wonderful to see and hear stories and reminisces from former students, families, and staff about what made KCVI and QECVI special. The most memorable stories are not about the building itself. We know what makes our schools special are the people, the relationships, and the connections. Already, during this first week, we have seen the excitement and spirit of KSS come alive and we know this will only continue.

We ask for your continued patience and support as we work through the odd lumps and bumps that are inherent to such a massive move. Much work to settle into the new building and new routines will continue into the new year, and possibly for a few months, as students and staff get used to the new space. We wish you all a safe and restful holiday break.
